A week of retreat at Sheldon
Tom recently spent a week at Sheldon Retreat Centre, about 8 miles outside Exeter β a place the parish has long supported. It was very hot, so he took walks in the early morning and evenings when it was a little cooler, enjoying the grounds' animals and some beautiful views. He also found a local pub within walking distance to watch England play Argentina β a result better left undiscussed.
Alongside using the Daily Prayer app, he found it a peaceful space for rest and reading, including Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church by Diane Langberg and, for lighter relief, The Puppet Show by M.W. Craven.
A few verses from Psalm 146 stayed with him:
Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.
